Safety Protocol 001: Comprehensive Resin Lab Safety Procedures¶
Protocol ID: U2M2-SAFE-001 Context: Complete safety procedures for all operations in the resin 3D printing lab, covering chemical handling, PPE, ventilation, emergency response, and waste management Hazard Level: High (skin sensitization, flammable solvents, UV radiation, environmental toxicity) Target Audience: All students
Potential Hazards¶
- Skin sensitization from acrylate monomers: Cumulative, potentially permanent allergic contact dermatitis from repeated skin exposure to uncured resin
- Eye chemical injury: Resin splash causes severe irritation and potential corneal damage; UV radiation from printer causes photokeratitis
- IPA flammability: Flash point 12°C — flammable vapors present at room temperature; ignition from hot printer components, static, or spark
- Respiratory irritation: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from resin and IPA in poorly ventilated spaces
- Environmental contamination: Uncured resin is toxic to aquatic organisms; must never enter drains or waterways
- Cross-contamination: Invisible resin transfer to personal items, shared surfaces, and other people via contaminated gloves and surfaces
- Thermal hazards: UV curing station generates heat; post-curing chamber temperatures can reach 60-80°C
- Slip hazard: IPA spills create extremely slippery floor surfaces
Required Precautions & Procedures¶
Before Entering the Resin Lab¶
- Verify ventilation system is operational (check indicator light or airflow at vent)
- Locate and verify: eyewash station (functional), fire extinguisher (charged, Class B/C), spill kit (stocked)
- Verify SDS binder is present and current for all resin products in use
- Remove or secure: food, drinks, cosmetics, contact lenses (glasses preferred in resin lab)
- Tie back long hair, remove dangling jewelry, roll up loose sleeves
PPE Donning (in order)¶
- Lab coat or chemical-resistant apron
- UV-blocking safety glasses with side shields
- Nitrile gloves (5+ mil thickness, properly sized) — LAST, over coat cuffs
During Resin Operations¶
- Never handle uncured resin or unwashed prints without nitrile gloves
- Change gloves every 30 minutes of resin contact or immediately if damaged
- Remove gloves before touching personal items (phone, bag, face, food)
- Keep resin vat covered when not actively printing
- Wipe resin bottle exteriors with IPA after each pour to prevent surface contamination
- Do not lean over open resin vat — fumes concentrate directly above the surface
- Monitor for any skin reactions (redness, itching) during and after each session
- Keep IPA containers sealed when not in use; never leave open containers unattended
- Ensure IPA is at least 1 meter from any heat source including the printer
PPE Doffing (in order — reverse of donning)¶
- Gloves FIRST — using inside-out technique to contain contamination
- Safety glasses — handle by arms/frame only
- Lab coat — turn inside-out while removing to contain any splash contamination
- Wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds immediately after PPE removal
Workspace Decontamination¶
- Clean all work surfaces with IPA followed by soap and water at end of each session
- Wipe down printer touchscreen, handles, and commonly touched surfaces
- Dispose of cleaning materials after UV-curing any resin residue
- Inspect and restock PPE supplies (gloves, paper towels, absorbent pads)
Emergency Response¶
Skin Contact with Uncured Resin: 1. Wipe excess resin with dry paper towel (do not spread) 2. Wash with soap and water for 2 minutes 3. Do NOT use IPA on skin — it increases dermal absorption 4. Monitor for allergic reaction for 48 hours 5. Report to supervisor and document
Eye Contact: 1. Proceed to eyewash station IMMEDIATELY (within 10 seconds) 2. Flush with clean water for MINIMUM 15 minutes 3. Hold eyelids open during flush 4. Remove contact lenses after starting flush 5. Seek medical attention — bring SDS 6. Do NOT rub eye; do NOT use IPA
IPA Spill: 1. Eliminate ignition sources (turn off printer if near spill) 2. Ventilate the area (open windows/doors) 3. Absorb with spill pads or paper towels 4. Do NOT use water to clean up IPA (spreads and dilutes but does not eliminate flammability) 5. Allow absorbed material to air-dry or dispose in sealed container
IPA Fire: 1. If small (<30cm flame): use CO2 or dry chemical extinguisher (Class B) 2. A metal lid or fire blanket can smother a container fire 3. Do NOT use water — it can spread the fire 4. IPA burns with a nearly invisible flame in bright light — approach with extreme caution 5. If fire is not immediately controlled: evacuate, close doors, call 911
Allergic Reaction (rash, hives, swelling): 1. Cease all resin contact immediately 2. Remove all PPE, wash affected area 3. Report to supervisor 4. Seek medical evaluation 5. Document: specific resin product, exposure duration, symptoms, onset timing 6. Student may be permanently restricted from resin operations pending medical clearance
