Safety Protocol 001: CO2 Laser Fundamental Safety

Protocol ID: U3M1-SAFE-001 Context: Fundamental safety awareness for CO2 laser cutter environments, covering beam hazards, fume hazards, and fire hazards Hazard Level: High (Class 4 laser — severe eye and skin injury potential, fire risk, toxic fume generation) Target Audience: All students

Potential Hazards

  • Beam hazard (Class 4): The CO2 laser beam (10,600nm, invisible infrared) can cause severe eye injury (corneal burns) and skin burns on direct or reflected exposure. Even scattered radiation can be hazardous at close range.
  • Fire hazard: The laser heats materials to ignition temperature. Wood, paper, fabric, and some plastics can catch fire during cutting, especially without air assist or with incorrect settings.
  • Toxic fume hazard: Laser cutting vaporizes material, producing toxic and irritating fumes. Wood produces creosote; acrylic produces MMA; rubber produces sulfur compounds. PVC produces LETHAL hydrochloric acid gas.
  • Electrical hazard: CO2 laser power supplies operate at 15,000-25,000V DC — lethal voltage. Never open the power supply or laser tube compartment.
  • Mechanical hazard: The gantry moves rapidly during operation — pinch and crush hazards exist within the cutting chamber.

Required Precautions & Procedures

Before Any Laser Operation

  • Verify the exhaust system is running and producing visible airflow (hold tissue near intake)
  • Verify the water chiller is running and at temperature (18-22°C)
  • Verify the air assist compressor is running and producing pressure
  • Verify the lid interlock is functional — test by opening the lid and confirming the laser will not fire
  • Identify the fire extinguisher location (CO2 type preferred)
  • Ensure no prohibited materials are in the cutting chamber (see Material Restrictions below)
  • Focus the laser to the correct height for the material being used

During Laser Operation

  • The lid must remain CLOSED at all times while the laser is firing
  • Never override or bypass the lid interlock safety switch
  • An operator must be present and monitoring the machine at ALL times during cutting — NEVER leave a running laser unattended
  • Watch for flame (visible through the viewing window) — small flares are normal during cutting, sustained flame is not
  • If sustained flame appears: press the EMERGENCY STOP button immediately, then open the lid to extinguish
  • Keep a spray bottle of water near the machine for extinguishing small flame-ups after stopping the laser
  • Do not place flammable materials (paper, cardboard, rags) on or near the laser cutter

Material Restrictions — CRITICAL

Fiberglass/Carbon Fiber BANNED Produces toxic particulate, damages exhaust filters
Coated/painted metals BANNED Unknown coating chemistry, fume risk
Food items (unless certified) BANNED Unknown chemical composition

After Laser Operation

  • Keep the exhaust running for 30-60 seconds after the last laser operation
  • Do not immediately remove cut materials — some may still be hot or smoldering
  • Inspect the cutting bed for debris that could ignite on the next job
  • Close the lid when the machine is not in use

Emergency Response

If material catches fire during cutting: 1. Press EMERGENCY STOP immediately 2. If the fire is small: open the lid and use the spray bottle or a damp cloth to extinguish 3. If the fire is larger: use the CO2 fire extinguisher 4. If the fire cannot be controlled in 10 seconds: evacuate and call 911 5. Do NOT use water extinguishers on electrical fires

If the laser fires with the lid open (interlock failure): 1. Do NOT look toward the cutting area 2. Press EMERGENCY STOP or disconnect power 3. Evacuate the immediate area 4. Report the interlock failure — the machine must not be used until repaired
