Safety Protocol 001: Comprehensive Laser Lab Emergency Procedures

Protocol ID: U3M4-SAFE-001 Context: Complete emergency procedures for all laser lab scenarios including fire, fume exposure, laser exposure, electrical hazards, and medical emergencies Hazard Level: High (Class 4 laser, fire, toxic fumes, high voltage) Target Audience: All students

Potential Hazards

  • Fire: Material ignition during cutting — the most common laser lab emergency
  • Toxic fume exposure: Exhaust system failure or processing of prohibited materials
  • Laser beam exposure: Interlock failure or bypass — invisible 10.6Ξm beam causes corneal burns and skin injury
  • Electrical shock: High-voltage power supply (15-25kV) — potentially lethal
  • Mechanical injury: Gantry/motion system — pinch and crush hazards
  • Burns: Contact with hot materials, heated bed, or laser tube housing
  • Slip/trip: IPA, water, or material scraps on the floor

Required Precautions & Procedures

Fire Emergency

Level 1 — Small Flame (contained to cut area, <10 seconds): 1. Press EMERGENCY STOP 2. Open the machine lid 3. Spray water from the spray bottle directly on the flame 4. Monitor for 60 seconds — ensure no re-ignition 5. Inspect machine for damage 6. Document the incident (material, settings, cause) 7. Resume only after completing inspection

Level 2 — Spreading Flame (beyond cut area, spray bottle insufficient): 1. Press EMERGENCY STOP (if not already pressed) 2. Grab the CO2 or dry chemical fire extinguisher 3. PASS technique: Pull pin → Aim at base of fire → Squeeze handle → Sweep side to side 4. Stand 1.5-2 meters from the fire during discharge 5. If the fire is not extinguished after one full extinguisher discharge: proceed to Level 3 6. After extinguishing: ventilate the area, do not restart the machine

Level 3 — Uncontrolled Fire: 1. Evacuate immediately — alert everyone in the area: "FIRE — EVACUATE NOW" 2. Close doors behind you (contains fire, limits oxygen) 3. Pull the building fire alarm if available 4. Call 911 from a safe location 5. Account for all personnel (buddy system) 6. Meet at the designated assembly point 7. Do NOT re-enter until cleared by fire department

Toxic Fume Exposure

If fumes are detected in the room (burning, acrid, or chemical smell): 1. STOP the laser job immediately 2. Verify exhaust is running — if not, turn it on immediately 3. Open all windows and doors for cross-ventilation 4. If smell is strong/acrid (possible banned material): evacuate the immediate area 5. Do NOT open the machine lid until exhaust has been running for 2+ minutes 6. Identify the material being processed — is it on the banned list?

If a person shows symptoms of fume exposure (dizziness, sore throat, headache, difficulty breathing): 1. Move the person to fresh air immediately 2. If breathing is difficult: call 911 3. If symptoms are mild: monitor for 15 minutes in fresh air 4. If symptoms persist: seek medical attention 5. Document: material processed, duration of exposure, exhaust status, symptoms

Laser Beam Exposure (Interlock Failure)

If you suspect the laser beam is active with the lid open: 1. DO NOT look toward the cutting area — avert your eyes immediately 2. Press EMERGENCY STOP or disconnect power 3. Alert everyone in the room: "LASER HAZARD — DO NOT LOOK AT THE MACHINE" 4. If anyone reports eye pain, tearing, or vision changes: seek immediate medical attention 5. Tag the machine OUT OF SERVICE — interlock must be repaired before any use

Eye exposure symptoms (may be delayed 6-12 hours): - Pain, tearing, light sensitivity, blurred vision, feeling of "sand in the eye" - If any of these symptoms appear: seek medical attention immediately, mention CO2 laser exposure (10,600nm)

Electrical Emergency

If electrical arcing, sparking, or burning smell from electronics is observed: 1. Press EMERGENCY STOP 2. Do NOT touch the machine — it may be energized 3. If safe: disconnect the main power cord by pulling the plug (not the cord) 4. If arcing continues: turn off the circuit breaker for that outlet 5. Do NOT attempt to repair — qualified technician required 6. Document and report

Medical Emergency (cuts, burns, other injury)

Burns from hot materials or machine surfaces: 1. Run cool (not cold) water over the burn for 10-20 minutes 2. Do not apply ice, butter, or adhesive bandages 3. For burns larger than a quarter (25mm): seek medical attention 4. For any burn on the face or eyes: seek medical attention immediately

Cuts from sharp materials or tools: 1. Apply direct pressure with a clean cloth or bandage 2. For minor cuts: clean, apply bandage 3. For deep cuts or heavy bleeding: apply pressure, elevate, seek medical attention 4. For cuts that may involve embedded material: do not remove — seek medical attention
