Safety Protocol 001: Wood Lathe General Safety¶
Protocol ID: U7M1-SAFE-001
Potential Hazards¶
- Workpiece ejection: Improperly mounted or cracked workpieces can fly off the lathe at high velocity, causing severe impact injuries
- Entanglement: Loose clothing, hair, jewelry, or rags can wrap around the spinning workpiece or spindle, pulling the operator into the machine
- Flying debris: Wood chips, bark fragments, and dust are continuously thrown from the workpiece during turning
- Tool catches: Improper tool presentation can cause the tool to dig in violently, potentially injuring hands or throwing the workpiece
- Respiratory hazards: Fine wood dust (especially from exotic species like cocobolo, padauk) is a confirmed carcinogen (IARC Group 1). Hardwood dust exposure is regulated under OSHA 1910.1000 (PEL: 5 mg/mΒ³ for hardwood, 15 mg/mΒ³ for softwood). Dust collection per NFPA 664 (Prevention of Fires and Explosions in Wood Processing) is required.
- Noise exposure: Wood lathes can produce 85-100 dB during operation, exceeding safe exposure limits
Required Precautions & Procedures¶
- Pre-operation inspection: Check the workpiece for cracks, splits, bark adhesion, and embedded objects (nails, screws, stones) before mounting.
- Secure mounting: Ensure workpiece is firmly seated on drive center, faceplate screws are tight, or chuck jaws are fully engaged.
- Hand-rotation check: Always rotate the workpiece one full turn by hand before starting the motor.
- Speed verification: Start at the lowest appropriate RPM for the workpiece diameter and condition. Never exceed recommended speeds.
- Tool rest positioning: Maintain 1/8" to 1/4" gap between tool rest and workpiece. Reposition as the workpiece diameter reduces. NEVER adjust the tool rest while the lathe is running.
- Stance: Stand to the side of the workpiece (out of the firing line) when starting the lathe. Maintain balanced footing during operation.
- Dust collection: Activate dust collection before turning. Use supplemental air filtration for extended sessions.
- Stop before measuring: Always stop the lathe completely before measuring, adjusting the tool rest, or changing tools.
- No sanding with fingers: When sanding on the lathe, hold abrasive with a sanding pad or foldβnever wrap sandpaper around fingers.
Emergency Response¶
- Workpiece ejection: Stop the lathe immediately. Check for injuries. Do not attempt to catch a flying workpiece. Report the incident and inspect the machine before resuming.
- Entanglement: Hit the emergency stop immediately. Do NOT attempt to pull freeβcall for help. Cut material if necessary to free the operator.
- Eye injury from debris: Flush eyes with eyewash station for 15 minutes. Seek medical attention. This is why face shields are mandatory.
- Lacerations from tool catch: Apply pressure to the wound. Seek first aid. Report the incident.
- Dust exposure reaction: Move to fresh air. If respiratory distress occurs, seek medical attention.
PPE Requirements¶
| PPE Item | Required | Standard/Rating | Notes |
