Material ID: U7M1-MAT-001 Purpose: Quick reference for lathe specifications, speed selection, and setup procedures

Lathe Component Reference

Component Function Key Details
Headstock Houses powered spindle Thread size: 1"x8 TPI (typical), Morse taper #2
Tailstock Supports workpiece free end Slides on bed, quill with Morse taper #1 or #2
Bed Structural frame Cast iron; determines swing and between-centers capacity
Banjo Positions tool rest Clamps to bed; adjustable along full bed length
Tool Rest Supports turning tools Set 1/8"-1/4" from work, at or slightly above center

Speed Selection Chart

Diameter Roughing RPM Finishing RPM Max Rim Speed
2" 3000 3600 6000 FPM
3" 2000 3000 6000 FPM
4" 1500 2250 6000 FPM
6" 1000 1500 6000 FPM
8" 750 1125 6000 FPM
10" 600 900 6000 FPM
12" 500 750 6000 FPM

Formulas: - Roughing RPM = 6,000 / Diameter (inches) - Finishing RPM = 9,000 / Diameter (inches) - Rim Speed (FPM) = (π × Diameter × RPM) / 12

Setup Checklist

  • [ ] Inspect workpiece for defects (cracks, knots, metal)
  • [ ] Mark centers on both ends
  • [ ] Mount drive center/chuck/faceplate
  • [ ] Install live center in tailstock (if needed)
  • [ ] Position tailstock, lock bed clamp, advance quill, lock quill
  • [ ] Set tool rest height and distance
  • [ ] Lock banjo and tool rest post
  • [ ] Hand-rotate one full revolution—check clearance
  • [ ] Set speed to lowest appropriate RPM
  • [ ] Don PPE: safety glasses, face shield, dust mask, hearing protection
  • [ ] Stand to the side, start lathe

Workholding Quick Reference

Method Best For Key Requirement
Between centers (spur + live) Spindle turning, table legs, tool handles Center marks on both ends
Steb center + live Spindle turning (safer) Allows slippage on catch
Faceplate Bowls, platters, initial chuck mounting Min. #10 x 3/4" hardened screws
Scroll chuck (tenon) Bowls, vessels, any re-mounting Pre-turned tenon or recess required

Morse Taper Reference

Taper Size Small End Dia. Common Use
MT1 0.475" Mini/midi lathe tailstocks
MT2 0.700" Full-size headstocks and tailstocks

Emergency Procedures

  1. Emergency stop: Hit the red stop button or switch immediately
  2. Workpiece ejection: Do not attempt to catch—clear the area
  3. Entanglement: Emergency stop, call for help, do not pull free
  4. Eye injury: Eyewash station, 15 minutes flush
