Activity 001: Lathe Identification and Setup Drill

Activity ID: U7M1-ACT-001 Duration: 30-45 minutes Objective: Identify all major lathe components and perform a complete setup procedure for between-centers turning.

Overview

Students will work in pairs to identify and label all major components of the wood lathe, then perform a supervised setup procedure from blank stock through first rotation. No cutting occurs in this activityβ€”the focus is on machine familiarity, proper mounting, and safety verification.

Materials & Equipment Needed

  • Wood lathe (one per pair of students)
  • Pre-cut hardwood spindle blanks (2" x 2" x 12", poplar or maple)
  • Spur drive center and live center
  • Center finder/marking gauge
  • Rubber mallet
  • Safety glasses (required)
  • Face shield
  • Lathe component identification worksheet (provided)

Instructions & Procedure

Phase 1: Component Identification (10 minutes)

  1. Working in pairs, identify and point to each of the following components on the lathe: headstock, tailstock, bed, banjo, tool rest, spindle, handwheel, quill lock, bed lock, on/off switch, speed control.
  2. Record the lathe's specifications: swing, distance between centers, spindle thread size, Morse taper number.
  3. Complete the identification worksheet.

Phase 2: Workpiece Preparation (5 minutes)

  1. Inspect the spindle blank for defects: cracks, knots, checks, embedded objects.
  2. Use the center finder to mark centers on both ends of the blank.
  3. Use the rubber mallet to seat the spur drive center into one end.

Phase 3: Mounting Procedure (10 minutes)

  1. Insert the drive center (with blank) into the headstock Morse taper. Confirm it seats firmly.
  2. Install the live center in the tailstock.
  3. Slide the tailstock to within 1" of the workpiece and lock the bed clamp.
  4. Advance the tailstock quill until the live center contacts the workpiece center mark with firm pressure. Lock the quill.
  5. Position the tool rest: set height at spindle center, distance 1/4" from the nearest corner of the blank.
  6. Lock the banjo and tool rest post.

Phase 4: Safety Verification (10 minutes)

  1. Rotate the workpiece one full revolution by hand. Verify clearance at all points.
  2. Check that all locks are engaged: tailstock bed clamp, quill lock, banjo clamp, tool rest post.
  3. Verify speed is set to the lowest setting.
  4. With instructor observation, start the lathe briefly (3-5 seconds), then stop.
  5. Assess: Did the workpiece run smoothly? Any vibration? Any wobble?
  6. Demonstrate the emergency stop procedure.

Discussion Points

  • What would happen if you started the lathe without checking clearance?
  • Why do we start at the lowest RPM?
  • What signs would tell you a workpiece is not safe to turn?
  • How would setup differ for a 6" diameter bowl blank vs. this 2" spindle blank?

Expected Outcomes

  • Students can identify all lathe components by name
  • Students can perform a complete between-centers setup independently
  • Students demonstrate the hand-rotation clearance check
  • Students understand the emergency stop procedure

Assessment Rubric

Criteria Excellent (4) Proficient (3) Developing (2) Beginning (1)
Component ID All components named correctly 1-2 minor errors 3-4 errors Cannot identify major components
Setup Procedure All steps completed in order, no prompting Minor sequence errors, self-corrected Required prompting on 2+ steps Cannot complete without continuous guidance
Safety Checks All checks performed, clearance verified Minor omission, corrected when prompted Skipped 2+ checks Did not perform safety verification
Specifications All specs recorded accurately 1 spec error 2+ spec errors Could not locate specifications

Safety Considerations

  • Safety glasses are mandatory at all times near the lathe
  • Face shields must be worn when the lathe is running
  • Never reach over or behind a spinning workpiece
  • Long hair must be tied back; no loose clothing, jewelry, or gloves
  • Instructor must be present for Phase 4 (lathe activation)
