Student Material 001: Metal Lathe Operations Quick Reference

Material ID: U8M2-MAT-001 Purpose: Quick reference for lathe operations, procedures, and common setups

Lathe Operations Summary

Operation Tool Feed Direction Key Parameters
Facing RH turning tool Cross slide (X-axis) Light DOC, outside to center
Turning RH turning tool Carriage (Z-axis) with power feed DOC per side, check diameter
Shouldering RH turning tool Both X and Z Face the step square
Drilling Twist drill in tailstock Tailstock quill (Z-axis) Peck 1-2× drill diameter
Boring Boring bar Carriage (Z-axis) 60-70% bar-to-hole ratio
Taper (compound) Turning tool Compound handwheel Set compound to half-angle
Threading 60° threading tool Lead screw + half-nut Compound at 29°, slow speed
Parting Parting blade Cross slide (X-axis) On center, slow, steady feed
Knurling Knurling tool Cross slide + power feed 60-100 RPM, high pressure
Chamfering Turning tool or chamfer tool Compound at 45° Light cuts

Dimensional Control Checklist

  • [ ] Verify cross slide dial reads radius or diameter (check your specific lathe)
  • [ ] Zero dial collars at reference surfaces before cutting
  • [ ] Calculate total material to remove: (Current - Target) / 2 = radial depth
  • [ ] Leave 0.010-0.020" for finishing pass
  • [ ] Always measure with the lathe STOPPED
  • [ ] Measure at two or more locations along the length
  • [ ] Use micrometer for critical dimensions (more accurate than calipers)

Thread Calculation Quick Reference

Thread TPI Major Dia Drill Size (75% thread) Compound Depth
1/4-20 UNC 20 0.2500" #7 (0.201") 0.0375"
5/16-18 UNC 18 0.3125" F (0.257") 0.0417"
3/8-16 UNC 16 0.3750" 5/16" (0.3125") 0.0469"
1/2-13 UNC 13 0.5000" 27/64" (0.4219") 0.0577"

Total compound infeed ≈ 0.750 / TPI

Troubleshooting Guide

Problem Likely Cause Solution
Chatter marks Tool overhang, speed too high, light DOC Reduce overhang, decrease speed, increase DOC
Taper on turned surface Tailstock misaligned, chuck jaws worn Realign tailstock, use 4-jaw chuck
Rough surface finish Dull tool, feed too high, no coolant Sharpen/index tool, reduce feed, add coolant
Drill wandering No center drill, dull drill Always center drill first, resharpen
Parting tool chatter Below center, speed too high Adjust height, reduce speed
Thread not fitting nut Wrong pitch, wrong depth, tool angle off Verify gear setup, check depth, check 60° angle
Bore out of round Boring bar deflection Use larger bar, reduce DOC, add support

Lathe Setup Checklist (Before Every Cut)

  • [ ] Workpiece secure in chuck
  • [ ] Chuck key REMOVED
  • [ ] Tool on center height
  • [ ] Tool post bolts tight
  • [ ] Correct RPM set
  • [ ] Carriage stop set (if applicable)
  • [ ] Guards in place
  • [ ] Cutting fluid ready
  • [ ] Safety glasses ON
  • [ ] Area clear of tools and obstructions
