Module 3: Milling Machine Operations

Overview

This module covers vertical milling machine operations, focusing on setup, end milling, face milling, pocketing, and slot cutting. The milling machine produces flat surfaces and complex profiles in multiple axes. Proper vise setup and workpiece clamping are critical for safety and dimensional accuracy.

Learning Objectives

  1. Set up a milling machine vise and verify alignment (parallels, clamping)
  2. Mount a workpiece securely and verify with a dial indicator
  3. Perform a facing cut (flycut) to produce a flat surface
  4. Perform end milling (vertical slot cutting)
  5. Perform face milling to true a surface
  6. Perform pocket milling (cavity cutting)
  7. Perform drill press operations (hole drilling on the mill)
  8. Apply appropriate feeds and speeds for efficient cutting
  9. Manage chip evacuation and apply coolant

Assessment

  • Dimensional verification: Verify finished part dimensions
  • Safety check: Proper quill handle position, safe operation of all controls

  • Operating vertical milling machine with powered table (preferred)
  • Milling machine vise (fixed jaw and adjustable jaw)
  • Parallels (various sizes, pair)
  • Test indicators and dial indicator
  • Cutting tools (end mills 1/8"–3/4", face mills, fly cutter)
  • Cutting fluid (coolant) for materials being cut
  • Test workpieces (mild steel, aluminum)
  • Measuring tools: dial calipers, depth gauge, height gauge
  • Chip brush for safe chip removal
  • Protective equipment: safety glasses, hearing protection
