Module 1: Vinyl Cutter Technology

Module ID: U09-M1-VCHT Title: Vinyl Cutter Technology Fundamentals Duration: 2 hours Prerequisite: Unit 09 orientation complete

Module Overview

Module 1 introduces learners to the electromechanical principles, hardware architecture, and operational workflows of vinyl cutting equipment. Learners will understand blade mechanics, cutting force calibration, design software pipelines, and file preparation—building the foundational knowledge required for accurate, repeatable vinyl cutting operations.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, learners will:

Knowledge: - Explain the mechanics of rotary blade cutting and how downforce affects cut quality - Describe blade types (60°, 45°, 30°, specialty) and their applications - Articulate how cutting mats work and their role in material retention and blade safety - Identify the design-to-cut workflow in professional design software (Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio) - Distinguish between file formats (SVG, PDF, DXF) and their appropriate use cases

Skills: - Set up vinyl cutting equipment and load material correctly - Prepare digital designs in design software (tracing, welding, grouping paths) - Configure cut settings (speed, pressure, blade type) for different material types - Perform test cuts and interpret results to adjust blade depth - Export designs in formats compatible with cutting equipment

Competencies: - Operate vinyl cutter with safe, confident technique - Troubleshoot common setup issues (material alignment, blade installation) - Optimize design files for cutting accuracy and production speed - Make informed decisions about blade selection and machine settings

Module Structure

This module is organized into 5 slides covering equipment fundamentals through advanced file optimization, plus hands-on activities, assessment, and safety protocols.
