Activity 001: Single-Color Vinyl Decal — Cut, Weed, and Apply¶
Activity ID: U9M2-ACT-001 Duration: 40 minutes Objective: Design, cut, weed, and apply a single-color adhesive vinyl decal to a prepared surface using the dry application method.
Overview¶
Students create a custom decal (name, logo, or geometric design), cut it on the vinyl cutter, weed the design, apply transfer tape, and apply the finished decal to a glass, metal, or plastic surface. This is the foundational adhesive vinyl workflow.
Materials & Equipment Needed¶
- Vinyl cutter with design software
- Oracal 651 adhesive vinyl (multiple colors available, 6"×12" sheets)
- Standard grip cutting mat
- Weeding tools (hook, tweezers)
- Transfer tape (paper type)
- Squeegee
- Isopropyl alcohol (70%+) and lint-free cloth
- Application surface: glass tile (4"×4"), metal water bottle, or plastic laptop panel
- Scissors or paper trimmer
- Design template or student-designed SVG file
Instructions & Procedure¶
Phase 1: Design and Cut (10 minutes)¶
- Open the design software. Import a pre-made SVG or create a custom design.
- Size the design to fit the application surface (maximum 3"×3" for this activity).
- Verify all paths are closed and overlapping shapes are welded.
- Set material to "Oracal 651" or manually set: 45° blade, 100 gf downforce, medium speed.
- Load the vinyl (color side up) on the cutting mat and load into the cutter.
- Perform a test cut. Verify clean kiss cut. Adjust if needed.
- Send the full design to the cutter.
Phase 2: Weeding (10 minutes)¶
- Remove the cut vinyl from the mat.
- Using the weeding hook, begin removing negative space (waste vinyl) from the edges.
- Work inward, removing waste from around each design element.
- Remove interior waste from letters and enclosed shapes (counters in O, A, B, D, etc.).
- Use the light pad to verify all waste is removed and no design elements were accidentally lifted.
- Trim the backing to within 1/2" of the design borders.
Phase 3: Transfer Tape Application (5 minutes)¶
- Cut a piece of transfer tape slightly larger than the trimmed design.
- Peel the transfer tape backing and lay it over the weeded design.
- Squeegee firmly from center outward, overlapping strokes.
- Ensure all design elements are adhered to the transfer tape.
Phase 4: Surface Prep and Application (10 minutes)¶
- Clean the application surface with IPA and a lint-free cloth. Let dry completely (30 seconds).
- Plan the placement. You can hold the transfer tape over the surface to preview position.
- Peel the vinyl backing from the transfer tape assembly. The vinyl should lift with the tape.
- Carefully position on the surface. Once contact is made, press from center outward with the squeegee.
- Apply firm, overlapping strokes across the entire design.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Peel the transfer tape slowly at a 180° angle. If any vinyl lifts, press down and wait longer.
- Final squeegee pass directly on the applied vinyl to ensure full adhesion.
Phase 5: Evaluation (5 minutes)¶
- Inspect the applied decal for: bubbles, lifted edges, missing elements, alignment.
- If bubbles exist, prick with a pin at a shallow angle and squeegee flat.
- Document the result with a photo.
Discussion Points¶
- What was the hardest part of weeding your design?
- Did any design elements get accidentally removed during weeding?
- How would you approach this differently if the design were 12"×24"?
- What would change if applying to a curved surface like a tumbler?
Expected Outcomes¶
- Cleanly weeded decal with all design elements intact
- Bubble-free application on the target surface
- No lifted edges or missing pieces
- Professional-quality finished decal
Assessment Rubric¶
| Criteria | Excellent (4) | Proficient (3) | Developing (2) | Beginning (1) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cutting | Clean kiss cut, correct settings | Minor setting adjustment needed | Required multiple test cuts | Cannot achieve clean cut |
| Weeding | All waste removed, no design damage | 1-2 small pieces left or removed | Significant waste remaining | Cannot weed without damaging design |
| Application | Bubble-free, straight, centered | 1-2 small bubbles, minor alignment offset | Visible bubbles, off-center | Adhesion failure or significant bubbles |
| Surface Prep | Properly cleaned, dry, appropriate surface | Minor cleaning oversight | Inadequate cleaning | No surface preparation |
Safety Considerations¶
- Weeding tools are sharp—keep points directed away from your body
- Dispose of used blades in a sharps container
- IPA is flammable—keep away from heat sources
- Work in a well-ventilated area when using IPA for surface cleaning
- Wash hands after handling vinyl and adhesive
