Safety Protocol 001: Adhesive Vinyl Application Safety¶
Protocol ID: U9M2-SAFE-001
Potential Hazards¶
- Sharp tools: Weeding hooks, X-Acto knives, and blade tips cause puncture wounds and lacerations
- Chemical exposure: Isopropyl alcohol is flammable and a mild irritant; adhesive removers may contain stronger solvents
- Ergonomic strain: Extended weeding sessions cause hand, wrist, and neck strain
- Slip hazards: IPA and wet application solutions on work surfaces and floors
- Vinyl waste: Vinyl scraps on the floor create a slip hazard
Required Precautions & Procedures¶
- Tool handling: Always cut away from your body with X-Acto knives. Cap blades when not in use. Use a self-healing cutting mat under all knife work.
- Chemical safety: Use IPA in well-ventilated areas. Keep away from heat sources and open flames (flash point: 53Β°F for 70% IPA). Avoid prolonged skin contact.
- Ergonomic practices: Take a 5-minute break every 30 minutes during weeding. Use ergonomic tools with padded handles. Adjust work surface height to prevent hunching.
- Workspace cleanliness: Clean up vinyl scraps regularlyβthey are slippery on smooth floors. Wipe up IPA and wet application solutions immediately.
- Blade disposal: Used X-Acto blades and vinyl cutter blades go in a sharps container, never regular trash.
Emergency Response¶
- Laceration from weeding tool or blade: Apply direct pressure. Clean with antiseptic. Bandage. Seek medical attention for deep puncture wounds.
- IPA splash in eyes: Flush at eyewash station for 15 minutes. Seek medical attention if irritation persists.
- IPA spill fire: Use CO2 or dry chemical fire extinguisher. Do not use water on an IPA fire.
- Repetitive strain symptoms: Stop work immediately. Apply ice. Rest the affected area. Report to supervisor.
