Activity 002: Multi-Color Layered HTV Design¶
Activity ID: U9M3-ACT-002 Duration: 45 minutes Objective: Create and apply a two-color layered HTV design on a garment, mastering the multi-press technique with proper temperature and timing adjustments.
Overview¶
Students design a two-color HTV graphic, cut and weed both colors, then apply them in sequence using the multi-layer pressing technique. This activity builds on the single-color workflow and introduces the challenges of layer registration and sequential pressing.
Materials & Equipment Needed¶
- Vinyl cutter with design software
- Two colors of Siser EasyWeed HTV (12"×12" sheets)
- Standard grip cutting mat
- Weeding tools
- Heat press (preheated to 305°F)
- Cotton or cotton-blend T-shirt or tote bag
- Teflon sheet
- Ruler/placement guide
- Heat-resistant gloves
- Alignment template (printed or drawn)
Instructions & Procedure¶
Phase 1: Design Preparation (8 minutes)¶
- Create or import a two-color design. Example: a team name in one color with a background shape in another color.
- Separate the design into two layers in the software:
- Layer 1 (base layer—applied first): the background shape or base color
- Layer 2 (top layer—applied second): the text or foreground element
- Add registration marks if layers are complex.
- Mirror BOTH layers.
- Size both layers to match.
Phase 2: Cutting and Weeding Both Colors (12 minutes)¶
- Load color 1 HTV on the mat (carrier down). Cut Layer 1 (mirrored).
- Load color 2 HTV. Cut Layer 2 (mirrored).
- Weed both layers: remove waste, leaving design elements on their respective carrier sheets.
- Trim carrier sheets.
- Do a fit check: hold both carrier sheets (vinyl side together) up to a light to verify alignment. Layers should nest correctly.
Phase 3: Layer 1 Application (8 minutes)¶
- Pre-press the garment for 5 seconds.
- Position Layer 1 (base) on the garment: carrier up, vinyl touching fabric.
- Cover with Teflon sheet.
- Press at 305°F for 15 seconds, medium pressure.
- Open the press. Hot peel the carrier immediately.
- Layer 1 is now on the garment. Allow it to cool slightly (10-15 seconds).
Phase 4: Layer 2 Application (10 minutes)¶
- Position Layer 2 (top) over Layer 1 on the garment. Align carefully—use registration marks or visual alignment.
- The vinyl side of Layer 2 touches both the garment and the already-applied Layer 1.
- Cover with Teflon sheet. The Teflon protects Layer 1 from over-pressing.
- Press at 305°F for 12 seconds (reduced by 3 seconds to avoid over-pressing Layer 1).
- Open the press. Hot peel the carrier for Layer 2.
Phase 5: Final Press and Inspection (7 minutes)¶
- Cover the entire design with a Teflon sheet.
- Final press: 305°F for 5 seconds (seals both layers completely).
- Remove the garment. Allow to cool.
- Inspect:
- Both layers fully adhered?
- Layers properly aligned?
- No edge lifting on either layer?
- No scorching or discoloration?
- Gently test edge adhesion of both layers.
- Document with a photo.
Discussion Points¶
- How did reducing the press time for Layer 2 affect adhesion?
- Was alignment between layers challenging? What would help?
- What would you do differently for a 3-color design?
- How would printable HTV eliminate the need for layering?
Expected Outcomes¶
- Two-color layered design with accurate registration
- Both layers fully adhered without lifting
- No over-pressing damage to Layer 1
- Professional-quality multi-color garment
Assessment Rubric¶
| Criteria | Excellent (4) | Proficient (3) | Developing (2) | Beginning (1) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Layer Registration | Colors aligned within 1/16" | Aligned within 1/8" | Visible misalignment | Significantly off |
| Layer 1 Adhesion | Complete adhesion after Layer 2 pressing | Minor edge concern | Partial lifting | Adhesion failure |
| Layer 2 Adhesion | Complete adhesion, no overcooking | Minor re-press needed | Partial adhesion | Failed application |
| Time Management | Completed within time, correct press times | Slight time issue | Required significant extra time | Could not complete |
Safety Considerations¶
- All heat press safety rules from Activity 001 apply
- Extra caution when positioning Layer 2—the garment and Layer 1 are hot
- Use heat-resistant gloves when handling the garment between presses
- The Teflon sheet is critical for Layer 2—pressing without it can melt Layer 1 onto the press platen
- Do not rush Layer 2 positioning—misalignment is permanent once pressed
