HTV Workflow Checklist

Cutting

  • [ ] Design mirrored (text reads backwards on screen)
  • [ ] HTV loaded: carrier sheet (shiny) DOWN, vinyl (dull) UP
  • [ ] Material preset selected or manual settings entered
  • [ ] Test cut performed: vinyl cut through, carrier intact
  • [ ] Full design cut

Weeding

  • [ ] Waste vinyl removed from carrier sheet
  • [ ] Interior cutouts weeded (letter counters, small holes)
  • [ ] Verified against light—no waste remaining
  • [ ] Carrier trimmed to within 1" of design

Pressing

  • [ ] Garment pre-pressed (5 seconds)
  • [ ] Design positioned: carrier UP, vinyl DOWN (touching fabric)
  • [ ] Placement verified (centered, leveled)
  • [ ] Teflon sheet placed over design
  • [ ] Heat press closed at correct temp/time/pressure
  • [ ] Carrier peeled (hot or cold per HTV type)
  • [ ] Post-press through Teflon (3-5 seconds)
  • [ ] Design inspected for adhesion

Multi-Layer Press Timing

Layer Temperature Time Notes
Layer 1 (base) Full recommended Full recommended Press and peel as normal
Layer 2 Same temperature Reduce 2-3 seconds Cover Layer 1 with Teflon
Layer 3 Same temperature Reduce 4-5 seconds total Maximum recommended layers
Final press Same temperature 3-5 seconds All layers, Teflon cover

Fabric Compatibility Quick Check

Fabric Safe Temp HTV Type Special Notes
100% Cotton Up to 380°F Any standard Best all-around substrate
Cotton/Poly Blend Up to 320°F Standard + sublimation blocker Watch for dye migration on dark garments
100% Polyester Max 300°F Low-temp or sublimation blocker Dye migration risk above 300°F
Nylon Max 280°F Low-temp ONLY Will melt at standard HTV temps
Spandex/Lycra Up to 300°F Stretch HTV Must use stretch type for flexibility
Canvas/Denim Up to 380°F Standard May need higher pressure

Garment Care Instructions (for finished items)

  • Wait 24 hours before first wash
  • Wash inside-out on gentle/delicate cycle
  • Cold or warm water (not hot)
  • Tumble dry low or hang dry
  • Do not bleach
  • Do not dry clean
  • Do not iron directly on the HTV design
  • If re-pressing is needed, always use a Teflon sheet

Common Mistakes and Prevention

Mistake Prevention
Forgot to mirror Add "MIRROR?" as first checklist item
HTV loaded upside down Carrier sheet (shiny) always faces the mat
Pressed too long Use a timer; follow manufacturer specs exactly
Garment not pre-pressed Always pre-press 5 seconds first
No Teflon sheet Keep a Teflon sheet permanently on the press
Hot-peeled a cold-peel product Check product specifications before peeling
White HTV on dark polyester Use sublimation-blocking HTV
