Module 1: 3D Scanning Technology

Module ID: U11-M1-3DSR Title: 3D Scanning Technology Fundamentals Duration: 2 hours Prerequisite: Unit 11 orientation complete

Module Overview

Module 1 introduces the physics and principles of 3D scanning technology. Learners will understand structured light vs. laser scanning, point cloud generation, mesh creation, accuracy specifications, and common scanning artifacts. This foundational knowledge supports subsequent modules on equipment operation and mesh processing.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, learners will:

Knowledge: - Explain how structured light scanning works (projection + triangulation) - Describe laser triangulation scanning and its advantages/disadvantages - Understand point clouds (coordinate data, color, normal vectors) - Articulate how point clouds are converted to meshes (voxelization, Delaunay triangulation, Poisson reconstruction) - Identify sources of scan error (noise, occlusion, ambient light, material reflectance)

Skills: - Interpret scanner specification sheets (accuracy, resolution, working distance, field of view) - Evaluate whether a scanner is appropriate for a specific application - Understand trade-offs between resolution and processing speed

Competencies: - Make informed decisions about scanning strategy (single-shot vs. multi-view, resolution settings) - Predict scan quality challenges for different object types - Understand the limitations of scanning technology
