Module 2: Scanner Operation and Calibration¶
Duration: 3 hours | Microcredential: MCCPDL-U11M2-v1.0
Module Overview¶
Module 2 transitions from scanning theory to hands-on scanner operation. Learners will perform scanner calibration using reference objects, execute multi-angle scanning sessions with turntable and handheld techniques, and align multiple scans into a unified point cloud. Emphasis is placed on developing repeatable scanning workflows that produce high-quality data.
Learning Objectives¶
- Perform a complete scanner calibration procedure using a manufacturer-supplied calibration target
- Configure scanner settings (exposure, resolution, working distance) for different object types and materials
- Execute a multi-angle scanning session using a turntable, achieving full surface coverage
- Apply reference targets and alignment markers for scan registration
- Align and merge multiple scans into a single, coherent point cloud
Module Structure¶
- Slides: 3 presentations
- Activities: 2 hands-on labs
- Assessment: 12-question quiz (70% pass)
- Safety Protocols: 1 safety doc
- Student Materials: 1 reference guide
Prerequisites¶
- Module 1: 3D Scanning Technology recommended
Next Module: Mesh Processing and Export
