Module 2: Scanner Operation and Calibration

Duration: 3 hours | Microcredential: MCCPDL-U11M2-v1.0

Module Overview

Module 2 transitions from scanning theory to hands-on scanner operation. Learners will perform scanner calibration using reference objects, execute multi-angle scanning sessions with turntable and handheld techniques, and align multiple scans into a unified point cloud. Emphasis is placed on developing repeatable scanning workflows that produce high-quality data.

Learning Objectives

  1. Perform a complete scanner calibration procedure using a manufacturer-supplied calibration target
  2. Configure scanner settings (exposure, resolution, working distance) for different object types and materials
  3. Execute a multi-angle scanning session using a turntable, achieving full surface coverage
  4. Apply reference targets and alignment markers for scan registration
  5. Align and merge multiple scans into a single, coherent point cloud

Module Structure

  • Slides: 3 presentations
  • Activities: 2 hands-on labs
  • Assessment: 12-question quiz (70% pass)
  • Safety Protocols: 1 safety doc
  • Student Materials: 1 reference guide

Prerequisites
