Module 3: Hot Glass Techniques¶

Module Overview¶
Module 3 introduces hot glass techniques including flameworking (torch-based glass shaping), kiln fusing, and slumping. Students learn to work with glass at elevated temperatures, program kiln firing schedules, execute proper annealing cycles, and create fused and shaped glass pieces using controlled heat.
Learning Objectives¶
- Operate a flameworking torch safely to shape borosilicate glass rods and tubing
- Design and execute a kiln fusing schedule for soda-lime glass, including ramp rates and hold times
- Perform glass slumping using a kiln and mold to create three-dimensional forms from flat fused pieces
- Program and monitor a complete annealing cycle to ensure stress-free finished pieces
- Troubleshoot common hot glass failures including devitrification, thermal shock, and incomplete fusing
